In Week Two, we traveled South on I-29 from Sioux Falls, SD, then headed across the state of Iowa on I-80 with a side trip to Elk Horn. Iowa was the big surprise state. No idea what we were expecting, but we sure were pleasantly surprised by how PRETTY Iowa is with all the picture-perfect farms dotting the landscape. Once we reached the quad cities, we continued on I-74 Southeast through rural Illinois. We skirted around the city of Indianapolis on their beltway, which closely resembled the Indy 500, and then caught I-70 East to Columbus. We stayed two nights in Columbus with friends and enjoyed the camaradie of a fun household and great party after so many nights in sterile hotel rooms. Then we continued on our journey East through Ohio on I-70 and then South to West Virginia on I-77. Eventually we headed East through rural West Virginia on US-50 and made our way to I-68 through Maryland and then South on various interstates into Northern Virginia. We stayed in Northern Virginia with family for a few days before getting on an airplane for the next portion of our Spring Fling vacation.

Fresh Fruit Does Exist In Sioux Falls! |
The Significance of Fresh Fruit
There was a restaurant between our hotel and the next hotel, so we walked over there for dinner when we first arrived in Sioux Falls. It was easy, so we went there again for breakfast. Aleshia asked for pancakes and fresh fruit. The waitress had a blank look, so Karin asked her what types of fresh fruit they had. She said, "Blueberries and strawberries," so Karin asked for a combination of both. The waitress said they were compotes and could not be combined. Karin tried again for "fresh" fruit and we ended up with canned peaches, which the waitress still thought was "fresh" fruit. We thought maybe "fresh" was difficult to get in Sioux Falls and let it go. Five miles away, we were enjoying the Sertoma Butterfly House on the South side of town and what do we see? Bowls of FRESH FRUIT for the butterflies to munch on. Too funny! |
